Submitting your blog to directories

directory 150x150 Submitting your blog to directories Today I submitted Blogtap to a number of directories including: bloggapedia.com, blogcatalog.com and blogarama.com. I just did a simple Google search for blog directories and submitted my blog to the directories listed in the top three results.

There really are only two reasons why you would want to submit your blog to a directory.

Submitting to blog directories will:

  • Give your blog site PR juice. This is only true of course if you submit to directories that give you a link that is dofollow. Dofollow blog directories are not hard to come by and the three that I submitted to today all gave me dofollow links. If you submit to a directory that adds the “nofollow” attribute to your link, then search engines will never follow that link and not give your site higher rankings because of it. You can figure out if the link is dofollow or nofollow by right clicking the link in your browser and clicking properties. If you see a ‘Relation: nofollow’ then you know search engines will not pay any attention to the link.
  • Send visitors to your site. You will only get large amounts of visitors sent from the directory source if you pay for a premium listing or get a high ranking through the directory site’s ranking system. Blog directories that have a ranking system will sometimes provide a code you can place on your site to send traffic to the directory. The more traffic sent, the higher the rank your blog will receive in the directory.

Some important things to remember when submitting your blog to a directory:

  • Always fill out the description field. This will boost search engine ranking for the page on the directory list because it gives search engines something to crawl. It will also boost the PR value of the link itself because Google gives higher credibility to links that are surrounded by text. Make sure you fill your description field with text that is relevant to your blog so that Google will rank you higher.
  • Make sure to submit your site into the correct category. This will not only benefit you in getting visitors from directory to view your listing (visitors most often browse by category) but will also give the link more credibility with Google.

Submitting your blog to directories is free and easy. It should be one of the first things you do when you start your blog. Try to look for search directories that do not add the “no follow” relation attribute to their listings. Technorati is one blog directory that you should submit to, despite the fact that your link will have a nofollow attribute. Technorati will tell you your blog’s authority (by counting up the number of links to your blog) and is considered the authority on blog ranking.
