Six powerful link building tips for your blog

If content is the king and visitors are the loyal subjects of your blog, then links are the kingdom’s currency. Simply put: the greater the number of external links to your blog, the higher organic search engine rankings will be and the more traffic your blog will receive.
A few days back, Chris wrote about do-follow blog commenting, which is one of the most effective methods for link building and developing new relationships with fellow bloggers. To help you succeed in your link building efforts, I have highlighted a few more link building techniques that will transform your blog into a hyperlink haven.
#1 Create a viral-friendly list
Lists have a tendency to go viral and to attract external links to your blog. Everybody loves useful, handy lists. Analyze your target audience to find out their particular wants and needs. Once you have some good topics, create useful lists around them. For example, in the blogging niche you can create a list like “The top 50 do-follow blogs,” “The top 50 do-follow article sites,” and “The top 25 do-follow article directories.”
#2 Conduct interviews
People are flattered by interviews. Use and abuse this human tendency for building links. Find high authority bloggers in your niche and interview them for your blog. It is always a win-win situation. Most of the time, interviewees will write a thank you post with a link back to your blog and sometimes an excerpt of the interview. Even if they don’t link back to you, at least you are now on their radar and have a better chance of getting links from them in the future.
#3 Organize contests and giveaways
Who doesn’t love free stuff? Regularly organize contests with attractive prizes like exclusive e-books, access to private forums and cash prizes. Ask your participants to blog about it and link back to you. If you don’t have time to organize a contest and promote it, find contests currently running in your niche and sponsor them.
#4 Submit to article directories and press release websites
Article submissions and press releases are some of the oldest but simplest and most effective methods of link building. Create a few quality articles or press releases and submit them to top article submission or press release websites. I often witness bloggers buying poor quality articles and then taking the time to submit them to dozens of directories. This is not a good practice. Always prefer quality over quantity.
#5 Take advantage of social bookmarking/networking
The popularity of social networking and bookmarking sites are growing at a whopping rate. Promote high quality content on sites like Digg, Reddit, Del.icio.us and Facebook. Popular content on these sites attract links from high authority domains. The links may not be do-follow but they have the potential to bring your blog massive amounts of traffic.
#6 Guest post
Guest posting (like what I am doing right now) is a great way to build high authority links to your blog and to develop relationships and credibility within a particular niche. Find relevant bloggers in your niche and contact them for guest posts. You can also join guest-blogging communities like MyBlogGuest and BloggerLinkUp to get in touch with bloggers looking for guest posts and vice versa.

This is very good information. Another way to get good backlinks is by submitting your website or blog to Directories. There are tons of websites that have Directory Lists, just google it.
Thank you for the tips. I use a viral friend list on twitter and on facebook. I get a lot of visits from that list from these two sites. Not only that, it also helps creating backlinks because some other bloggers on my list spreads the word for me too.
Nice guest post! Article and press-release submission is a time-consuming work, but very effective.
Giveaways and contests are a very good way of promoting and building links for blogs.
